With the opening of the new school year, parents are busying shopping not only for clothes and school supplies, but for the best backpack that will accommodate their child’s needs. Over the years, I have watched children go to school with a variety of bags in all different sizes, colors and character preferences. Kids can’t wait to show their backpacks off to their friends which are truly a conversation piece for them. I wonder though how many children actually select a backpack that will accommodate their books and supplies while actually being safe for their backs and necks.

As adults we sometimes don’t realize the stress backpacks can put on children’s bodies, especially their spine, shoulders and muscles. Their posture can be affected as well.

It is important to check with your doctor about your concerns and seek his advice as to the size and proper fitting of your child’s backpack to make sure your child doesn’t develop any spinal injuries.

Remember, as the Knight guarding the Holy Grail expressed to Indiana Jones in his choosing of the carpenter’s cup, ”Choose Wisely.”
